There is a veritable feast of rugby league at the Mayfield sports Centre today as Mayfield host the Rugby Football Leagues diversity day. The day is the brainchild of Paul Scanlon Wells who is an RFL league for all officer. His idea is to showcase the diverse cultures we have in our area and to get them involved in something together, in this case RL The fun kicks off at 12 noon as the Mayfield Masters team takes on an Oldham select masters team if last weeks masters is anything to go by it should be a cracking game played in a great sporting manner. All past players are invited to turn up and don their boots again for this game and join the likes of Andy Duffy, Neil Wood, and Steve Gartland who all played last time out.

Next up is the cross border challenge as Mayfield u16’s take on Scotland’s Ayr Knights this again should be a cracking game of rugby played maybe with a little more pace than the previous spectacle. The Knights boast several international players among their ranks so this will be a stern test for the home team but one which they will no doubt rise to.

3o’clock sees a match with true international flavour when the New Zealand masters play the West Indies these teams are both unknown quantities really but with the wealth of experience on show another treat for fans of the game is assured.

Last but certainly not least, for those not wanting a full contact game there is a tag rugby match kicking off at 4 o’clock with a Mayfield side taking on Rochdale Swarm again anyone who is interested is welcome to come on the day and join in.

Also during the day there will be what is a first for Mayfield, as they stage a display of Kabaddi, the 4000 year old Indian game. the game is a team sport that combines characteristics of both rugby and wrestling and is popular all over Asia. The display will be given by the Grange kabaddi club from Oldham where Mayfield Mustangs recently had their first taste of the sport.

The club will be open from 11 o’clock and there will be food and refreshments available. So come on down for what promises to be another great day of sporting action at the Mayfield Sports Centre, and remember if you want to play bring your boots.

Mayfield would like to thank the sponsors for todays event, the Crawford street based ROCHDALE SUZUKI.

Wayne Jopson, 31, was injured in what he described as a ‘freak accident’ playing for Mayfield Rugby League in February this year.
Mr Jopson has lost sight in his right eye and has had a temporary false eye fitted.
Copperpot FC, in conjunction with Mayfield RLFC, held the benefit for Wayne at Castleton Sports Centre.
A spokesman for Copperpot, the highly successful football team Mr Jopson served for many years, said: “The turn out and support was unbelievable. Over 350 people turned out, many more bought tickets as a gesture. Funds to support Wayne were raised from ticket sales and also an auction and raffle was held. Many businesses contributed prizes including Physio Works, Jamilla Paul, Rochdale AFC, Sheffield Utd, Burnley FC, Sale Sharks, Oldham AFC, Everton FC, Bolton Wanderers and Ricky Hatton, and Mayfield donated a percentage of the bat takings.
Many local artists dedicated their time free including Brendon Decko, Andy Lee & the very talented vocalist January.
Steve Whitehead of Copperpot FC and owner of Physioworks added; “Copperot FC would like to thank everybody who dedicated their time and effort to make this possible - too many to mention but in particular special thanks to Aidy McDermott who organised the entertainment and the benefit, Mayfield ARLC, the Ratu family and Pete Duffy for all their hard work in sourcing the prizes and helping with the organization and all the players and officials at both clubs who sold tickets. Thanks also to local businesses, including Rochdale Online, who supported these efforts.
“The success and turn out shows how popular this young man is. It wasn’t all about raising money it was also to show the appreciation, care and respect we have for Wayne as a person and a local amateur sportsman. It was nice to help Wayne financially, especially when he hasn’t been able to work for two months and probably a few months more.
“Wayne is probably one of the most successful amateur footballers in this town with over twenty titles to his name and I know he would belong on the top table with some of the best players to grace the amateur scene in this town.
“Many local clubs were represented, Rochdalians, Weavers, Whitworth Valley to name but a few; also local referees and the two leagues”. Also present were many Rugby League players from Mayfield and Rochdale Cobras to show their support.
“Rochdale receives a lot of stick, however, days like this just shows what the town is all about, especially the amateur sporting community, everybody comes together when called upon and sporting differences are put aside.”
Mayfield will also be holding a family day in aid of Wayne in the summer and there will also be a veterans football match.

The day warmed up with the current Mayfield under 16’s winning the annual ‘dads and lads’ game – the lads showing that this year they have grown up enough and improved as Rugby players, to overcome the cunning and guile of the ‘dads’. Highlight of the game was a length of the field try to Carl Agard, who finished off a flowing break by Luke Senior. On this showing against adults many of these under 16’s look to have a promising future in the game, be that at Mayfield or in the professional ranks.

The teams, watched by a large and appreciative crowd, played a round robin format – and as per masters ‘rules’ all games ended in a draw with a rousing three cheers for the teams. Flowing Rugby league was the order of the day and the highlights included marvin Connelly’s spring-heeled break down the left wing, gold shorted Gordon baker’s ‘sportsmanship’ and Tony Hilton’s ‘joe montana quarter back’ like passing.

And, Alan would have been delighted the hosts showed the same passion on the field, as he had off it for more than 50 years.

Needing a win to guarantee a place in the National Conference first division next season, Mayfield swept aside fifth place Castleford with a display of pace, power and precision.

Leading the way for the home team with a stunning performance was Andrew Moroney, who ran straight, tackled tenaciously and helped himself to a brace of tries.

He was well supported by Wayne Corcoran, who also had an outstanding game and Ben Simpson, whose bulldozing runs were a constant thorn in the side of the visitors.

That said, the whole team contributed towards a famous victory and all the players were able to leave the field with their heads held high.

Mayfield started brightly and might have gone ahead in the first minute, Steve Wood unable to cling on to Corcoran’s pass.

They didn’t have to wait long, though, Aidy Gleeson’s penalty one minute later giving them the lead.

The home team survived a scare when ham-fisted Matthew Bacon failed to hold on to Jamie Benn’s neat cross-kick with the try-line begging.

Mayfield then made a hash of Benn’s long clearance kick, a penalty ensued and Benn converted to level the scores.

The home team responded well, Moroney brushing off a high tackle to cruise in for a try, Gleeson added the extras.

Castleford stayed in touch via another penalty, Benn again on target.

But when the restart kick was dropped Simpson led the charge for the line, was held down in the tackle and Gleeson knocked over the penalty.

Mayfield increased their lead, Moroney collecting Corcoran’s intuitive chip over the defensive line to gallop in for a try. Gleeson made it a six-pointer.

The home team were rampant but were hampered by a referee who seemed keen to apply some of the arcane laws of rugby league, much to the bafflement of players and supporters alike.

This allowed Castleford the field position from which Benn sent James Clarkson crashing over the line. Benn converted.

With half time approaching, Lee Atkinson dropped a goal to take his team into the break, leading 17-10.

The referee continued to play his part and two successive penalties early in the second half, the second converted by Benn, closed the gap for the visitors.

Mayfield were in belligerent mood, Moroney breaking the line, fending off the last tackler and slipping the ball to Wood, who raced in for a try. Corcoran landed the touchline conversion.

The home team looked comfortable at this stage but another ‘mystery’ penalty, followed by two more for dissent, took Castleford deep into Mayfield territory. And they produced their best move of the match, slick handling creating space on the outside for Lewis Richardson to score.

The visitors’ celebrations were short-lived, Corcoran powering forward before offloading to Simpson, who had only to fall over the line. Gleeson converted.

Mayfield then scored the try of the match, Simon Moore and Ian Sampson combining to send a delighted Rob Kershaw in for a try. Gleeson added conversion.

With a 19-point lead and their efforts taking their toll the hosts took their foot of the gas, Carl Burke nipping in from close range to touch down. Benn converted.

The score was the last of an entertaining game in which the only concern was the award of 23 penalties. The standard of refereeing has been a problem throughout the season in the games I have watched and, while it’s important for young referees and touch-judges to gain experience, they must have a feel for the game not just apply the laws to the letter.

Mayfield can now use the summer to regroup. They have the nucleus of a good team, but there will be some areas they need to strengthen. The important thing is to get the 2010-11 campaign off to a good start and not, as they have done this time around, spend the season playing catch up.
