December 20th, 2011 | by Simon |Rochdale Mayfield will host The University of Gloucestershire All Golds rugby league team in the Preliminary round of the famous Rugby League Challenge Cup on the weekend of February 4/5th 2012.
The Challenge Cup is the oldest rugby knock out competition in the world.
Inaugurated in 1897 last year’s winners at Wembley Stadium were Wigan Warriors who overcame Leeds Rhinos in one of the classic cup finals.
University of Gloustershire Head Coach Ken Stone is relishing a stern test against Mayfield:
” This is just the sort of test our young team require.
Mayfield is a strong club and we are looking forward to a traditional Lancashire welcome!”
The victors will travel away for the first round proper, to meet the winners of the tie between Cumbrian side Millom and the British Police over the weekend of February 18th/19th. At stake in that tie will be a game against professional opposition from the RFL Championship and Chamionship 1.
