MASTERS DAY AT MAYFIELD
May 20th, 2010 | by Simon |

Scotland masters team at murrayfield who featured mayfield’s Paul Scanlon-wells and ex Scotland international Scott hastings who used Mayfield kit for their international against England.
Rochdale Mayfield rugby league Club held a Masters day at their castleton sports club on Sunday. Masters Rugby league is a semi-contact version of the sport for the over 35’s, open to former players and people new to the sport, and spectators and players alike from Rochdale and Oldham flocked to see the old guys in action.
The day warmed up with the current Mayfield under 16’s winning the annual ‘dads and lads’ game – the lads showing that this year they have grown up enough and improved as Rugby players, to overcome the cunning and guile of the ‘dads’. Highlight of the game was a length of the field try to Carl Agard, who finished off a flowing break by Luke Senior. On this showing against adults many of these under 16’s look to have a promising future in the game, be that at Mayfield or in the professional ranks.
A number of ex-professionals were on show later in the day when teams from Eccles, Oldham st annes, saddleworth and waterhead joined Mayfield and a non-mayfield rochdale select team in the Mayfield masters festival. The teams, watched by a large and appreciative crowd, played a round robin format – and as per masters ‘rules’ all games ended in a draw with a rousing three cheers for the teams. Flowing Rugby league was the order of the day and the highlights included marvin Connelly’s spring-heeled break down the left wing, gold shorted Gordon baker’s ‘sportsmanship’ and Tony Hilton’s ‘joe montana quarter back’ like passing.
Masters Rugby league slogan is ‘we do not stop playing because we grow old – we grow old because we stop playing’ and the old bodies on show certainly enjoyed their play day!
The Mayfield Masters team will continue throughout the summer taking in trips to various rugby league clubs around the country and anyone interested should contact Simon Howe on 07917883779. The only qualification is that you are over 35.
