A solid start for sam’s men

Mayfield put in good performance at Sharlston

Rochdale Mayfield travelled to Wakefield on Saturday, to take on Sharlston – The current holders of the Yorkshire cup, Pennine Presidents cup, Wakefield Presidents cup and Pennine Premier League Champions.

The hosts were celebrating the opening of their new base and the first game for their new coach, ex-Wigan and Hull star Chris Chester, and Mayfield obliged with a sterling effort from all players. The two teams took a difference approach to the game as a preparation for the forthcoming season – Mayfield fielding a squad of 28 which included around ten of the first team squad, and Sharlston staring with their 2nd team and bringing on a whole new team, their firsts, for the final game.

The game against 2nd team was won comfortably by Mayfield who had great efforts by Duncan Simpson, Tony Appleyard and Shoey Brierley to add to tries from Paul Day, Craig White, Andy Gregory, Stefan Howard and goals by John Marsland.

The tempo then changed as the Sharlston 1st team ran out, fresh and in their new kit. Mayfield dug deep – showing their fitness – eventually losing out 16-10 despite tries from Steve Wood and Jack Sampson. Sharlston obviously expected to dominate the depleted Mayfield, and their frustration boiled over a couple of times – but Matty Williams, Jack Sampson, Sean Snape, Lee Atkinson and Ben Simpson, amongst others, led the way with determined defence and swift attack.

Frustrations were forgotten in the bar afterwards were the friendship between the clubs cemented a promise of a return fixture at Mayfield next season.
