The Inaugural ‘Rochdale 9’s’ competition

A great day was had by all!

The weather was fantastic on Saturday and the turn out and Rugby played matched it as over 100 players came to Mayfield to compete in the Rochdale 9’s competition.

Watched by a crowd of at least 200 men, women and children, teams representing Mayfield, Rochdale Cobras, Todmorden and Littleborough, along with players from Whitworth and Oldham, challenged hard for the honour of winning the historic Rochdale Charity Cup and Riley Cup.

The initial rounds saw Todmorden and the Mayfield Barbarians through to the Riley cup final, where tough tackling and a great spirit shone through for Todmorden to lift the cup. This was a great effort by the club who are trying to use this competition as a spring board back to regular participation in Rugby League.

In the main competition Mayfield 1sts and 2nds ease through to the Charity Cup play offs along with Littleborough and the impressive Rochdale Cobras.

The final saw Mayfield 1st against Cobras and the first half was an end to end affair which delighted the large crowd with scorching tries and shuddering defence. In the second half Mayfield pushed ahead to win the Charity Cup with the breathtaking attack that was needed to break the Cobras fantastic efforts. The try of the day went to Rob Kershaw who scouped up a loose ball on his own 10 metre line to run the length of the field, outstripping the newly crowned 9’s sprint champion, Leon Rogose.

Fijian ‘T’ Natini from Rochdale Cobras got the player of the tournament award - the Joe Kershaw Trophy and Mayfield captain Benn Coombes recieved the Charity Cup form David Heaton of the Rochdale Amatuer Rugby League.

This was a fantastic occasion that we hope to make bigger and better next year and every year from now on. Credit to Sammy, Pete Duffy and Andy Rogose for the organisation and Wayne and Alyson Hartley, Emma Hilton, Debbie, and Ben Boothman for the drink, food and entertainment - which all made for a great day for amatuer Rugby League in Rochdale.

NCL summer league

A big thank you is owed to all players and officials who got involved in the summer league trial. it wasn’t much of a success for us and we probably wouldn’t want to enter again or to endorse a move to summer rugby, but at least we put a team on the park and many of the lads showed up well and gave 100% for Mayfield. It beat going shopping anyway!
