NATIONAL CONFERENCE LEAGUE SUMMER – PENNINE DIVISION

Ovenden 48 – 12 Rochdale Mayfield.

A young Rochdale Mayfield side, severely depleted by holidays and work commitments, travelled the Ovenden in Halifax in the latest round of the National Conference Summer League – Pennine division. A full first team for Ovenden, including two former Halifax stars, completed the double over Mayfield who showed plenty of spirit and never gave in.

The pace of former Halifax starlet Graham Charlesworth cut through Mayfields defence at will early in the game despite valiant defence by captain Aidan Gleeson and the strong pairing of Paul Day and Andy Gregory – all of whom must be looking to push for a place in the first team next season. Mayfield worked hard in the second period and strong forward drives from Adam Pirouzan and a mountain of work by Seta Tala led the way.

Despite being a man down after Rob Wells was sin binned for a technical offence, the rewards came in the form of a John Marsland try, who followed up his own towering bomb and then added the conversion, and Curly Kershaw try who rolled back the years to scoot in from twenty metres, leaving defenders in his wake for a typical dummy half try.

Much improved Mayfield triumph at Balderstone

Rochdale Mayfield 30 – 16 Bradford Dudley Hill.

Rochdale Mayfield had a number of players returning from work and holiday commitments and this showed in a much improved display that dispatched Bradford Dudley Hill to only there second defeat of the National Conference League Summer  - Pennine division.

Bradford Dudley Hill are no strangers to ‘summer rugby’ having won the Summer Conference National League 3 title in 2005, and they arrived at Balderstone on top of the Pennine division table, but the power of the Mayfield pack and the finishing prowess of the backs resulted in a comfortable victory for the home side.

Mayfield started strongly but conceded the first score against the run of play when Bradfords pacy centre went the length of the field. The scored was levelled with a try to Adam Pirouzan who was unstoppable from close to the line. The rest of the half was characterised by strong and uncompromising defence led by Mark Biggins and Craig White, until Andy Lee broke the deadlock by sidestepping his way under the posts on the half time whistle. 12 – 4 to Mayfield.

The second half continued with solid defence by both sides, and Bradford again scored first to cut the deficit to 2 points. Then Sean Snape took over. John Marsland and Paul Hancock prompted from half back for good field position and Snape showed good footwork and running lines to score two quality tries and take Mayfield out of sight. The game ended with the try of the day to Seta Tala who powered through the Bradford defence in his own 20 metre zone and showed true pace to finish in style under the posts. Marsland ended with 5 from 5 conversions.

Mayfield travel to Bradford for the return fixture next Saturday – the final game in this Summer ‘experiment’.
