Today Mayfield were again visitors to Humberside at East Hull who were lying 4th in the Premier Division before kick off. The day was perfect for rugby league with warm sunshine and a slight breeze.

In the first three minutes the die was cast with three consecutive penalties and during the rest of the game was littered with many more to come throughout! East’s No7 Phil Hasty didn’t take long to make his mark on the game when in the 8th minute he chipped over the Mayfield defence into the left corner and a missed connection with the boot by No11 Simon Moore let East’s No2 Michael Haldenby get a hand on the ball to score in the corner. From out wide No20 Scott Yeaman couldn’t make the extra two points. 4 – 0.

Mayfield had a chance on 13 minutes to score when No5 Rob Kershaw, and No12 Danny Chrimes put No4 Seta Tala through, but the ball slipped from his grasp on the line to knock on.

On 15 minutes from a Mayfield scrum again the ball was dropped and Hasty was the quickest to react, scooping up to touch down under the posts. This time Yeaman added the two points 10 – 0.

With the help of three more penalties on the trot Mayfield were camped on the Hull line for the best part of 5 minutes, but unable to penetrate their defence eventually taking the option of a field goal to get on the board in the 20th minute. 10 – 2

In the 27th minute East’s should have gone further ahead with a great passing move between No6 Gary Blanchard, Hasty, Haldenby and then Hasty again, but were penalised for crossing 10 metres out!

Only a couple of minutes later on 29 No9 Paul Pickering started a move finding Blanchard, then Ashley Johannessen finishing with No3 Stuart Coates on the right wing scoring next to the corner flag. Again Yeaman missed with his conversion attempt 14 – 2.

Virtually from the re-start Hull broke through some poor tackling for No13 Mark Blanchard to go in under the crossbar. This time Yeaman slotted over the two pointer to take the score to 20 – 2.

With the half time whistle seconds away Hasty again tore through some poor defending slipping a pass to the supporting Mark Blanchard to get his second try. The two points were added by Yeaman. 26 – 2.

5 minutes into the second half Mayfield’s lively hooker Ryan Douglas managed to make a break with No11 Simon Moore and fullback Komah Naumatua in support to score a deserved try. No7 Johnny Marsland converting. 26 – 8.

Again another period of pressure on the Hull line came to nothing with too much one man rugby and little support play.

On 54 minutes Ryan Douglas took a knock and had to leave the field injured and within a minute East’s were again over the whitewash when Gary Blanchard, No1 Painter and No5 Michael McGowan combined on the right. Yeaman fluffed yet another conversion 30 – 8.

With 58 minutes gone Mayfield No10 Andy Gleeson blasted his way through a brace of defenders and only the tackle from Hasty who forced the ball free then hoofed it over the dead ball line saved a score?

60 minutes gone and again Hasty got a pass out to Johannessen to score in the left corner. Yet another missed conversion from Yeaman 34 – 8.

Referee Mr Croft had warned East’s several times for laying on in the tackle and in the 62 minute dispatched No14 Jamie Edwards to the sin bin for an immediate repeat infringement. Only a minute later Phil Hasty followed for a 10 minute spell in the bin for an alleged ‘stiff arm’?

Even down to 11 men Mayfield couldn’t make any headway and to rub salt in the wound Hull had the last say of the afternoon when Yeaman went in for a try and No18 Danny Hill added the extra two to make the final score 40 – 8.

Even with the penalty count hugely in Mayfield’s favour it was a disappointing display by especially after last week’s performance when they showed such grit and determination. The old saying of “After the Lord Mayor’s Show cometh the…………….” springs to mind after this disjointed effort!

The score could also have been considerably more had Yeaman had his kicking boots on?

Mayfield play  a backlog fixture with Wigan St Judes on Tuesday night at Castleton Sports Centre with a 7.30pm kick off.
