By “Mad Mal The Mauler” …….not at all pretty to watch! After last week’s “Lord Mayor Show” against champions Skirlaugh, followed the proverbial “Sh*tcart” against West Bowling! Two performances that couldn’t be further apart, unaided by indifferent refereeing that had to be seen to be believed?
Mayfield started, or should I say, didn’t start with a whimper and followed it up with several more throughout the first 20 minutes. West Bowling deservedly took the lead on 3 minutes with strong running through a non-existent defence and took the conversion easily.
Field then did manage to cross for an untidy but unconverted try.
Four minutes later Mr Robinson showed a yellow to a WB lad for what was deemed a high shot so ‘Field should have had the advantage, but did they? No. It was Bowling that went through again on 10 minutes for another try, unfortunately Ian Wormold who laid on the pass for the try suffered a badly broken leg in the tackle that brought him down and the match was delayed for around 20 minutes until the ambulance had taken the stricken player off to hospital.
The game resumed with a successful conversion making it 12-4 . Two minutes later a WB penalty made it 14-4.
With Bowling back to full strength Mayfield hit back on 26 minutes for another unconverted try, but went back to sleep with WB regaining the ball from the k.o. and going straight over for fortunately disallowed try! However some lapse in discipline gave West Bowling a converted penalty. Four minutes later with the line a metre away a dropped pass cost Mayfield a certain score, but only three minutes later made up for it with a try right in the far left corner, again a missed conversion.
A disputed high shot in the build-up to the try resulted in a red card and WB were down to 12 for the rest of the game, but then another penalty given needlessly to WB to the left of the upright made the half time score a deserved 18-8 to West Bowling.
The second half commenced with the stiff breeze behind Mayfield and no doubt a stiff word or two ringing in their ears from the h.t. rollicking! Ten minutes into the half Jon Pierce smashed his way over and Mike Kaufman took the two to narrow the lead. A mere three minutes later Woody screamed over for another with Kaufaman getting another two to take the lead 18-20. Two minutes later JP went in the corner for another, but Mike couldn’t convert this one. On 25 minutes into the half a harsh yellow for a WB player should have been the final nail in the Bowling coffin especially as Paul Rolls capitalised by getting another try, but no two-pointer again!
West Bowling wouldn’t lie down and hit back in the 67th minute and converted to bring the score 24-28 and continued to press for the victory and could have done so if a pass hadn’t been bounced/dropped under the Mayfield posts by a WB forward, a real let off!
Then the coup-de-grace from the mercurial Jannan Billings to steal in at the right hand corner and break the hearts of the Bowling faithful. Final score 24-32, but lets face it Mayfield were LUCKY and I almost felt sympathy for the West Bowling players and supporters who on this showing don’t deserve to be where they are in the league table and it has to be said that the adversity they suffered other sides would have resorted to the Biff, but they stuck to their guns and tried to win in the right manner! However a win and two points gained badly count just as much as the two gained superbly last week! Goal kicking could cost us dear in future games with only two out of seven today!
All the Aussie boys send their best to their Mums who apparently read this guff I pen, so I send a big hug to ‘em too!
We also wish a speedy recovery to Ian Wormald, good luck to you son!
